چکیده

This paper is concerned with scaling limits in kinetic semiconductor models. For the classical Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck equation and its quantum mechanical counterpart, the Wigner-Poisson-Fokker-Planck equation, three distinguished scaling regimes are presented. Using Hilbert and Chapman-Enskog expansions, we derive two drift-diiusion type approximations. The test case of a n + ?n?n + diode reveals that diierent scaling regimes may be present at the same time in diierent subregions of a semiconductor device. Numerical simulations of the stationary solution illustrate the good approximation of the kinetic solution by a drift-diiusion model and by a hybrid (adaptive domain decomposition) model.

Two limit cases of Born-Infeld equations

We study two limit cases λ→∞ and λ→ 0 in Born-Infeld equations. Here the parameter λ > 0 is interpreted as the maximal electric field in the electromagnetic theory and the case λ = 0 corresponds to the string theory. Formal limits are governed by the classical Maxwell equations and pressureless magnetohydrodynamics system, respectively. For studying the limit λ → ∞, a new scaling is introduced....

Scaling Limit for the Incipient Spanning Clusters

Scaling limits of critical percolation models show major differences between low and high dimensional models. The article discusses the formulation of the continuum limit for the former case. A mathematical framework is proposed for the direct description of the limiting continuum theory. The resulting structure is expected to exhibit strict conformal invariance, and facilitate the mathematical...

Effects of Far- and Near-Field Multiple Earthquakes on the RC SDOF Fragility Curves Using Different First Shock Scaling Methods

Typically, to study the effects of consecutive earthquakes, it is necessary to consider definite intensity levels of the first shock. Methods commonly used to define intensity involve scaling the first shock to a specified maximum interstorey drift. In this study the structure’s predefined elastic spectral acceleration caused by the first shock is also considered for scaling. This study aims to...

High- and low-confinement modes in simple magnetized toroidal plasmas.

Three-field simulations of interchange turbulence are presented for a simple magnetized toroidal plasma with a vertical magnetic field. The simulations show the presence of two turbulent regimes characterized by low (L) and high (H) confinement properties. We evaluate analytically the properties of the L regime, obtaining expressions for the plasma gradients and for the density and heat fluxes ...

Plane Wave Limits and T-Duality

The Penrose limit is generalized to show that, any leading order solution of the low-energy field equations in any one of the five string theories has a plane wave solution as a limit. This limiting procedure takes into account all the massless fields that may arise and commutes with the T-duality so that any dual solution has again a plane wave limit. The scaling rules used in the limit are un...
